Over the past twelve years, Paul has developed a visual language that is instantly recognizable—playful yet rigorous, intuitive yet deeply considered. His work has become an essential part of the Hudson Valley’s contemporary art landscape, distinguished by its quirky forms, rich color sensibilities, and recurring natural motifs.
This painting represents a pivotal synthesis within that body of work. The octopus, emblematic of Paul’s earlier figurative and cartoon-inspired period, serves as a familiar anchor. Layered atop it is a dense, atmospheric field of dots drawn from his later color-study explorations, where gesture, rhythm, and chromatic interaction take precedence.

Ryan Darnley is a highly accomplished tattoo artist whose work is deeply rooted in the tradition of old-school tattooing, while pushing decisively beyond it. Drawing from the bold linework and visual language of classic tattoo art, he has developed a style that is unmistakably his own—marked by inventive perspectives, confident shapes, and a fresh compositional sensibility. That evolution came fully into view with Nature and Now, his debut gallery exhibition in the Hudson Valley, a striking series of animal works that bridged tattoo tradition and fine art.
